Typhoon Haiyan, known as Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines, was an extremely powerful tropical cyclone that devastated portions of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, in early November 2013. It is the second deadliest Philippine typhoon on record, killing at least 6,009 people in that country alone, only to be surpassed by the September 1881 typhoon with the death toll of approximately 20,000. Haiyan is also the strongest storm recorded at landfall, and unofficially the fourth strongest typhoon ever recorded in terms of wind speed.

I hadn't paddled since legg lake, so eager to get on the water, I started paddling pretty hard as soon as we started the first lap. Getting to the first bridge, I was ready to take a break, but they just kept going. I thought "oh, well maybe some teams do it differently". Somewhere around the halfway point, I started to think that "oh crap, marathon means non stop?!?!?!". I ended up doing 4 laps in a row before taking a break and then doing another 2 laps.
